L’idea è venuta anni fa sia vedendo l’Ultima Cena nel Duomo di Modena, sia un video di Leonardo. Tre mesi fa ho iniziato l’opera, pensando di riproporre, secondo il mio stile, i canoni classici: gli Apostoli, Gesù con aureola e l’occhio di Dio. Gli apostoli sono tutti uguali, l’unico che rompe la simmetria è quello svenevole di Giovanni. Da qui è nato un problema; tutti chiedevano dov’era Giuda, come se questi dovesse essere per forza brutto, nero e cattivo. Ma Giuda ha avuto solo la sfortuna di essere stato scelto come mezzo per un piano supremo; sarà stato uno sporco traditore, ma, per paradosso, come diceva Falstaff “… l’arguzia mia crea l’arguzia degli altri”. Allora Giuda non ce l’ho messo, al suo posto ho messo un Marius martire, e ogni riferimento non è casuale, e il quadro l’ho finito.

The idea came years ago both seeing the Last Supper in the cathedral of Modena, and a video of Leonardo.
